Penn Dental faculty allege decline in education quality

Since Mark Wolff became dean of Penn's School of Dental Medicine in 2018, faculty members have raised concerns about a perceived decline in the quality of education and a dismissive administrative response to community concerns.

Under Wolff's leadership, the school restructured clinical instruction, reducing the number of primary care units and increasing student group sizes, which faculty say has led to less personalized attention for students.

Additionally, the school has seen an increase in enrollment without a corresponding rise in faculty, leading some to believe that the focus has shifted from education to generating revenue.

Despite these criticisms, Wolff has been credited with positive initiatives, such as expanding access to dental care for individuals with disabilities and increasing student research opportunities.

Some faculty members fear that Wolff's reappointment would further undermine the school's traditional values and educational standards.

“I’ve been affiliated with Penn for close to 50 years now. And this really is the first time I really feel like it’s being dismantled…What’s happening now is so fundamentally wrong that it really scares me that [the Dental School] will not be what it used to be.”
